Emily Dickinson (1830-1886)

She was born in Massachusetts
But lived a reclusive life
Living in her family house
She was nobody's wife
she loved to wear white clothing
and preferred to stay alone
she loved the room she lived in
and her poems set the tone
a really private person
a gardener of note
she studied Botany all her days
and included in what she wrote
of death and immortality
And when her dear dog died
She never could replace him
Carlo stayed there by her side
She wrote a lot of poems
in an unconventional style
soft, warm, clearly deepest thoughts
worth looking at a while
She's asked that all her work be burned
But her sister thought that we
Would appreciate the many lines
of truth and delicacy

Here's a poet introduced to me last night
by an American friend.
